When the Colony was established in 1843, and household expenses were not heavier than they are at present the Salary of the Governor was fixed at £6,000.-
In 1854 this was reduced to £4,000 upon the appointment of Sir John Bowring, who however repeatedly represented in a very forcible manner the inadequacy of such a Salary. Sir John Bowring to Lord John Russell, 13/74* Sept. 1855. Sir John Bowring to Mr Labouchere 47/75 May 1856.
This, indeed, appears to have been admitted by the Secretary of State Downing 7:35 3W March 1857. Downing Street 7:137 of 4th December 1857, who was only prevented from complying with the request that the Salary might be raised to £5,000 by the existence at that time of the since suppressed Office of Lieutenant Governor.
